NEW OLD MODELS FOUND |
The tag says it all. It's all about older models which I have discovered only recently. |
This is a set offered by Matchbox under the name 'Super Value Pack'. The idea behind these sets were most certainly to promote and sell older models. This set seems to have been offered in 1990. The set was available under item # MB832.

Here is probably a pre-production model of a Volvo 740/760 by Corgi. Such resin models were often used to see the model before it went into production in a smaller scale. As you can see this model is not complete. The front side doors, the hood, the bumpers, lights and trim are all missing. This example has also a lot of small air bubbles in the body which tells us that the resin was not the best. The roof has also wrapped but this is quite normal with such large and thin resin surfaces. Another striking detail is the unsymmetrical air intake grille between the hood and the front window (please see photo below ). But to my surprise the 1:36 scale models from the normal production have this error too. I have to admit that I never paid attention to this detail before. This resin models measures 250x102.9x65.5 mm which results in a approximate scale of 1:19. Click here for pictures of a 1:36 scale Volvo 760 by Corgi.
Here is a Volvo 760 by Corgi decorated as a promotional model for the Dutch airline company KLM-Cargo. The brown metallic Volvo has a black interior and features opening front side doors and a opening hood with detailed engine compartment. These are characteristics of every Volvo 740/760 in 1:36 scale by Corgi.
The differences between this and a normal release are :
Here is a mint Volvo 760 by Siku and still packed in the blister. This is the first time I have seen this larger type of cardboard/blister package combo. Features of the car are opening front side doors, working suspension and an indicated metal sunroof. The item number for this Volvo 760 is 1065.
I have also noticed that the model is stated as 1:55 scale model. The approximate dimensions of the model are 84x31x25 mm and do match very closely this information. These Siku models have always been listed as 1:64 scale models in my database. This will of course be corrected in the next release which will be available very soon. A collector from Switzerland told me about this scale model. It is a 1:64 diecast Volvo 760 made in Warsaw ( Poland ) by a company called Carex. I remember myself having seen one a few years ago. But since there were no packaging and the fact that the rear doesn't look like a Volvo, I simply thought that it wasn't one. Slight mistake. This petroleum blue Volvo has a black interior and opening front side doors. The model with the black bottom-plate has also a tow bar. It comes packed in a blister on cardboard.
More infos about the brand Carex : I am curious to find out how many versions Majorette released from the Volvo 760. Finding the different colors was an easy task. But it is more difficult to get an overview of every double-pack and every packaging version that has been released.
The last one that turned up is a green Volvo 760 packed in a blister showing an advertisement for the WWF ( World Wildlife Fund ). The blister calls to donate money in order to protect endangered animals. You were also able to win several prizes. The first prize was a trip to Florida. This release was only offered in France and issued in collaboration with WWW France. The deadline for the game was September 1988 so I suppose this set has only been offered that year. I would be very pleased if you could contact me if you are aware of other versions. Revell was selling back in 1987 and 1988 a kit for a Volvo 760.
Revell sold it under their product line 'Revell Junior' as easy to built snap kit. The product number was # 6239. The plastic kit consisted of 25 pieces, was 12.1 cm long and was available in blue. You can find a copy of the assembly instructions here. The kit was offered without any information about the scale. It is very close to 1:40. The kit however was not produced by Revell but by the Czech company Igra. Source : Revell There have been many Volvo 760 scale models produced in 3-inch scale. The company M.C.Toy did a kind of hybrid version.
Hybrid because the body was made of metal and the bottom-plate was made of plastic. A rather unusual combination. The model came packed in a blister on a cardboard. What makes this one more interesting is the fact that the back of the cardboard could be used as one piece of track for a whole race circuit.
